Located just 40kms from Moshi, this is one of the most beautiful parks in Tanzania. It is remarkable for its range of different habitats….a miniature volcanic crater, highland rainforest, acacia woodlands, and a string of crater lakes (Momella Lakes). Its three most spectacular features are these Momella Lakes, Meru Crater, and Ngurudoto Crater. In addition, on a clear day, this park offers spectacular views of both Mt. Meru and Mt. Kilimanjaro. Due to its close proximity to Moshi and Ameg Lodge, this park can be visited as a day excursion or an overnight stay. A wide variety of wildlife can be spotted here…various antelopes, buffalo, hyena, leopard, baboon, giraffe, elephant, hippo, and a wealth of bird life. The black and white colobus monkey is a favourite and is easily spotted here.
Although slightly physically challenging, it is a great opportunity to experience Tanzania in a different way and get close to nature. This canyoning trip offers a great amount of adventure and excitement. Throughout the walk there will be parts where you will swim, climb and jump off waterfalls. The walk through the river will take around 3 hours, and once out of the gorge, it will take half an hour to walk back to the starting point.
Visit Uru village, approximately 18km from Moshi, and experience a guided coffee tour to see how coffee is grown, harvested and roasted, and meet local farmers who produce some of the world's finest coffee on the upper inhabited slopes of Kilimanjaro. You will be guided by the local farmers to a nearby small holding coffee farm to take part in the whole process of picking, drying and roasting your own cup of coffee. Enjoy a delicious lunch prepared by the local women whilst taking in the beautiful scenery.
Visiting the Chagga Tribes is a pleasant day for those wanting to stay around the Kilimanjaro area. You can enjoy a day trip into the village of Marangu including a visit to the Chagga war caves, a coffee plantation, a local Tanzanian lunch, and finally a visit to the waterfalls for a cooling swim.
Located within the oldest sugar cane plantation in Tanzania, the TPC Golf Club is approximately 20km from Ameg Lodge, and offers a 9-hole golf course with inspirational views of Mt Kilimanjaro.
Slightly further away, is the Kiligolf Estate boasting an 18-hole golf course designed around lakes, and surrounded by acacia trees, with views of Mt Meru and Mt Kilimanjaro on either side.
Also called Chemka Maji Moto among locals, this is probably the most exciting place to swim in Tanzania. Kikuletwa Hot Springs is surrounded by amazing roots of fig trees and looks like a hidden paradise. On a quiet day, chances are, you will have the natural pool just for yourself! Although called hot springs, the water in Kikuletwa is not hot, but rather refreshing since the water comes from Kilimanjaro Mountain. Later enjoy a local Tanzanian lunch in Rundugai village.
A crater lake in a caldera at the border between Tanzania and Kenya and not far from Moshi town, Lake Chala is said to be the deepest inland water body in Africa with a depth of about 3km. Filled and drained by underground streams, the lake ranges in colour from deep blue to turquoise and green. Take a walk down the 100m deep crater rim to the lake shore and cool your feet at the water's edge among the rocks as you watch the water ripple peacefully through the lake in shimmering delight. Hike back up and take a walk around the Lake Chala Reserve looking out for the monkeys, baboons and birds.
For those who do not wish to climb Mt. Kilimanjaro to the top and yet want to experience the magic of the Mountain, then a day trip to the first hut will be ideal for them. Starting at the Marangu Gate, (1860m above sea level), this hike to the first hut Mandara 2700m above sea level, will allow you to have a feel of the mountain for one day. The hike through the rain forest will be breathtaking as you take in the landscape and vegetation on the slopes of Mt. Kilimanjaro. Children are also allowed to do the Mandara Hut Day Climb so it is a good way to introduce your young ones to the highest Mountain in Africa without taking them all the way to the top.
This very impressive waterfall is one of the tallest in the area, spewing crystal clear glacier water 70m into its basin. The beautiful path leading to Materuni Waterfall traverses through valleys and hills covered by tropical rainforest, coffee plantations, banana and avocado farms. As this trip is so close to Moshi town, it is ideal for those with limited time, but who would still like to see some of the nature and beauty that this region of Tanzania has to offer.
